There are many different treatment types of cancer, primarily surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. However the recent trend in the fight against cancer has shifted toward a more natural prevention. Scientist and researchers are currently looking forward to finding vaccines and other medicines that aid the body’s natural immune system. These new therapies that aid the immune system in the fighting off of cancer cells are called biological therapies.
Although these vaccines are being seen as a shining light in the field of cancer research and development, these treatments are still mainly experimental. Most of the treatment cancer patients undergo today still include the traditional surgery, and chemotherapy based methods. As well as for the treatment of cancer, scientist and researchers believe it is more likely that they will first develop a vaccine to prevent this disease all together. While no vaccine has yet to be developed, there is much hope and confidence that researches will soon have the answer.
Scientist and researchers have made huge breakthroughs in recent years in determining just how the immune system works in relation to cancer cells. The main issue lies in the body’s difficulty in determining the difference between what is and what is not a cancer cell. They believe that once the body is able to differentiate between these two types of cells, then the process of healing and preventing cancer will be much easier.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of a drug, used in the treatment of lung and colon cancer, to treat breast cancer. In New Zealand the drug Avastin is approved for the treatment of colorectal cancer.
Nicholas Robert of a healthcare services network, US Oncology, says the drug will help some women, but not everyone.
